This platform is dedicated to honoring the Black lives that were cut short from the injustices and racism surrounding COVID-19.
I lost my father, Evangelist Mario Chery to COVID-19 on April 12, 2020. Through this tragic experience, I personally witnessed the impact of injustice and racism in our healthcare system. Even my privilege as a practicing board certified internal medicine physician could not help save my dad. The circumstances surrounding the manner by which my father died will haunt me for the rest of my life. Simply put, he did not deserve to die the way he did. COVID-19 may have taken his ability to breathe on his own but injustice and racism caused him to have an unfair and shameful last breath.
My father’s death is not unique and unfortunately represents the truth for so many black families. Families who had NO voice, NO advocate, and NO choice. As a physician and daughter that hurts my heart beyond words. My family is choosing to elevate my father’s story as a means to empower the black community and allies to together in order to fight for justice. This fight is for the lives we lost, the moments we can never get back, and the stories untold.
